Managing A Split Bankroll

With the inseption of online poker it is a lot more common these days to find players with portions of their bankroll scattered about, although not in the way that Matt Damon had his funds scattered about in different hiding spots in the movie Rounders. The type of seperation we're talking about here is one of bankroll fragmentation - between real cash, virtual chips, "real money," and whatever else may complete your total bankroll, plus the network of bank accounts, online money merchants, and deposit and withdrawal methods that aid (and sometimes inhibit) your bankroll organization. When your bankroll is split up in such a manner that you feel conflicted between playing in the real world and in a variety of online arenas you have to ask yourself a few questions:

Things to think about when managing a split bankroll:

~ Are my funds easily transferable from one host to another (i.e. from an online account to real cash, or from one online host to another)?
~ Do you intend to play each bankroll segment seperately, or as a whole? For example - playing $1/2 No Limit tables online with only $200 in your account because you have another $5000 elsewhere that you can transfer without a problem.
~ Are you able to keep track of your entire bankroll and corresponding statistics effectively so that you keep the big picture in mind when managing your funds?

Also remember that with certain deposit and withdrawal methods come associated fees for every time you shuffle your funds around. This factors in to the overhead sector of bankroll management and means that, as a split-bankroll player, you may be encountering a lot more non-poker related fees than a player that's working from one big roll. Any way you slice it though, you have to remember that it's the whole roll that matters. You may be playing No Limit cash games on one online poker site, while playing multi-table tournaments on another, and then playing sit-n-go's at your friend's house on the weekend. You may have seperate stats for each game as well, but your primary concern should still be the big picture - what is my profit margin and where is it coming from? If you can keep your focus on this then it shouldn't matter where your bankroll is and how many pieces it's in.
